
The US president will travel to the country's industrial heartlands in Michigan and New Jersey in the coming days and will visit GM and Chrysler car plants. The areas have benefited from millions of dollars of economic support during the recession.
On Thursday, he will appear on a popular daytime chat show in New York, the first such appearance by a sitting president. One of the hosts of the ABC show is Whoopi Goldberg, the Hollywood actress.

Mr Obama's travels come amid growing criticism of his presidency. His popularity has recently slumped and he is being attacked for failing to cut unemployment during the economic recovery.
Democrats are concerned that Mr Obama's popularity will be reflected in the midterm elections this autumn which could lead to Republicans gaining a majority in the Senate. The Democrats may also lose control of several states.
Mr Obama will appear at several events in New York and Chicago to raise funds for the elections.
The Republicans are planning a so-called "no" campaign based largely around blocking Mr Obama's policies ? rather than proposing alternatives.
Last week, the President was forced to abandon flagship legislation designed to tackle climate change. A forthcoming Energy Bill will instead focus on holding BP to account for the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster.
